Preview: Promotion Play-Off Final Workington Town Ladies vs Wakefield Ladies

Our ladies will be hunting promotion in the play-off final this Sunday!

The biggest game of the season is here.

After months of hard work, outstanding performances and a campaign that has seen Workington Town Ladies establish themselves as one of the strongest sides in the competition, it all comes down to one afternoon in Yorkshire.

Workington Town Ladies take on Wakefield Trinity this Sunday in the Women’s Northern League One Promotion Play-Off Final, with promotion to the Women’s National Championship on the line.

And make no mistake, Town are ready.

80 MINUTES FROM PROMOTION

Town earned their place in the final in emphatic fashion last weekend, dismantling Leigh Miners Rangers 68-0 at the Fibrus Community Stadium.

It was a performance that demonstrated exactly what this group is capable of: relentless attack, disciplined defence, intensity and, above all, togetherness.

Now comes an entirely different challenge.

Wakefield will have home advantage, but Town have already shown throughout 2026 that they are more than capable of competing with the very best in Northern League One. The two sides finished first and second in the regular season, with Wakefield eventually topping the table and Town finishing runners-up.

Wakefield also come into the final after beating Stanningley 28-6 in their semi-final, setting up the meeting that everyone has been waiting for.

But there is one thing Wakefield will have to contend with that doesn't show up on the team sheet.

THE TOWN ARMY IS COMING

This isn't going to feel like an ordinary home game for Wakefield.

The Town Ladies won't be travelling alone.

The Derwent Park Supporters Club have filled two coaches, while the Travellers Rest Supporters Club are also taking supporters, with more Town fans expected to make the journey independently. That means well over 150 blue and white supporters are expected to descend on Yorkshire to get behind the Ladies.

The support has been building all season, and the supporters have made sure the players know exactly what this occasion means.

There will be blue and white in the stands. There will be Town voices around the ground.

And when the players walk out for the biggest game of their season, they'll know the Town Army is right behind them.

WE'VE COME TOO FAR TO STOP NOW

This group has continued to develop throughout the season and has already produced some memorable moments. From competing against Championship opposition in the Challenge Shield to putting together huge league performances, the Ladies have continued to raise the standards.

Their route to this final has been earned. And now, promotion is within touching distance.

The prize is a place in the Women's National Championship, a level that would represent another huge step forward for Workington Town Ladies and the continued growth of women's rugby league in West Cumbria.

READY FOR THE FIGHT

Head Coach Gareth Nicholson and his squad know exactly what awaits them. Wakefield will have the home crowd. They'll have the familiarity of their own surroundings. But Town will have something else.

Belief.

And an army of supporters travelling hundreds of miles to make sure the Ladies never feel alone.

The message from the squad is simple: we've earned our place here, we're ready for the challenge, and we're going to give everything for the blue and white.
