CALLUM PHILLIPS ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT
One of our most experienced and loved players will play his last professional game on Sunday.
Workington Town can confirm that long-serving favourite Callum Phillips will bring the curtain down on his rugby league career following this Sunday’s Cumbrian derby against Whitehaven at the Fibrus Community Stadium.
After a remarkable career , Callum has decided that this weekend will be his final appearance as a rugby league player, bringing an end to a journey that has seen him become one of the most recognisable and respected figures of the modern-day Workington Town side.
And there could be no more fitting setting for his final game than the Fibrus Community Stadium, wearing the Town shirt and lining up against local rivals Whitehaven.
Callum's relationship with Workington Town stretches back more than a decade.
Originally coming through the ranks with Seaton Rangers, he first established himself at Town before making his professional debut and going on to make 112 appearances during his first spell, scoring 24 tries.
After a spell with Whitehaven, Phillips returned to Workington in 2025 and quickly reminded everyone exactly what he could bring to the side.
His return came after a lengthy injury lay-off, but his determination and professionalism saw him work his way back to full fitness and back into regular rugby league.
Since returning, he has added to his Town appearance tally and now heads into Sunday's game having made 153 appearances for Workington Town.
He also represented Scotland on 7 occasions during his career, adding international honours to an already impressive playing CV.
A LEADER ON AND OFF THE FIELD
Throughout his time at Town, Callum has been recognised for his work ethic, standards and leadership.
A hooker who has never been afraid to put his body on the line, Phillips has built a reputation for his relentless defensive effort and his ability to lead from the front.
When he returned to Town, Head Coach Jonty Gorley described him as one of the most dedicated players he had worked with, highlighting the incredible effort Callum put into returning from his injury and earning another opportunity to play at Championship level.
Those qualities have made him far more than simply another player on the squad list.
He has been a leader, a teammate, a mentor and someone who has consistently represented what it means to pull on the Workington Town shirt.
ONE FINAL DERBY
Now, there is one final chapter to write.
Callum will take to the field for the final time this Sunday after passing HIA protocols,when Town welcome Whitehaven to the Fibrus Community Stadium for the final game of the regular season.
It is a fixture that already carries enormous significance, but with Callum bringing his playing career to a close, it promises to be an especially emotional afternoon.
Town supporters have watched Phillips give everything for the club across more than 150 appearances, and now we have the opportunity to give something back.
We want the Fibrus Community Stadium packed.
We want Callum to hear the Town faithful behind him one final time.
And we want to give one of our longest serving and most dedicated players the send off he deserves.
Callum Phillips has given Workington Town countless memories over the years.
