SCHOLEY ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT

Our club captain, and longest serving current player will call time on his career on Sunday at home.

Workington Town can confirm that club captain Stevie Scholey will bring the curtain down on an outstanding rugby league career following Sunday’s Cumbrian derby against Whitehaven at the Fibrus Community Stadium.

After more than a decade in the blue and white, Scholey has decided that this weekend will be his final appearance as a player bringing to an end one of the most committed and respected careers in recent Workington Town history.

ONE CLUB. ONE CAPTAIN. ONE TOWN.

For Town supporters, there can be few more fitting ways for Stevie to finish his playing career than in front of the home supporters, wearing the Workington Town shirt, against Whitehaven.

Stevie joined Town in 2015 after making the move from Maryport ARLFC, having already represented BARLA Great Britain at amateur level. He impressed during pre-season and earned his professional opportunity under then-head coach Phil Veivers and, more than ten years later, he remains a Town player.

Since making his debut, Stevie has become a mainstay of the Town pack, surpassing 100 appearances for the club and establishing himself as one of the most dependable forwards to pull on the shirt. The club's own profile describes his commitment, work ethic and willingness to lead from the front as defining characteristics of his career.

His career has included plenty of proud moments.

In 2017, Stevie collected three major player-of-the-year awards, including the Derwent Park Supporters Club Player of the Year, Workington Town Supporters Club Player of the Year and the News & Star Readers' Player of the Year. He was also named Players' Player of the Year in 2019.

He earned further recognition with a Cumbria call-up in 2022, featuring in the county's victory over Jamaica in what was a memorable night at Derwent Park and another achievement in a career built on hard work and perseverance.

A TRUE TOWNIE

Stevie's importance to the club goes far beyond his performances on the field.

He has been a leader, a teammate, a supporter of younger players and, above all, an outstanding representative of Workington Town.

He was appointed club captain for the 2023 season, with then-head coach Anthony Murray highlighting Stevie's passion, effort, experience and ability to lead by example.

That leadership has continued right through to 2026.

Last year, Stevie was recognised with the Brian Ritson Award for Most Influential Townie, while he also shared the 2025 Blue Knights Support Group Player of the Year award. His contribution was summed up perfectly by Jonty Gorley, who praised his consistency, work ethic and ability to hold his teammates accountable.

He was also granted a testimonial by the RFL in recognition of his decade-long service to the club.

And that tells the story of Stevie Scholey better than anything else.

Ten-plus years. One club. Countless battles. One shirt.

SUNDAY IS FOR STEVIE

There is now just one chapter left.

Town face Whitehaven on Sunday at 3pm in the final game of the regular season, with the derby providing the perfect opportunity for supporters to come together and show their appreciation for a player who has given so much to the club.

Town have won the last four consecutive Cumbrian derbies and will be looking to make it five but this Sunday is about more than the result.

It is about celebrating Stevie Scholey.

So, Town supporters, we need you there.
