REPORT: TOWN VS WIDNES

Our Town men travelled to Widnes for our final away trip of the year.

Town's final away fixture of the season ended in a 40-12 defeat against Widnes Vikings, but the scoreline doesn't tell the full story of the second half.

After finding ourselves 30-0 down at the break, Town showed plenty of character to turn the contest into a much more competitive affair after the interval.

In fact, the second-half scoreline finished 14-12, with Town matching the Vikings for the final 40 minutes and continuing to battle despite the considerable deficit.

Vikings Start Fast

Widnes made the perfect beginning, capitalising on an early error to take the lead after just two minutes.

The hosts added another try shortly afterwards before building a 14-0 advantage midway through the first half.

Town struggled to gain any sustained momentum and Widnes continued to punish mistakes, adding further tries to establish a 26-0 lead before another score shortly before the interval left Town facing a huge challenge at half-time.

But the response after the break was one the Town faithful could be proud of.

Town Fight Back

Widnes added another try early in the second half, but from that point Town refused to let the afternoon completely slip away.

Town began to create opportunities and eventually got their reward when Jake Carter found a way through the Vikings defence before converting his own try to get Town on the scoreboard.

The hosts responded, but Town continued to compete.

There were further opportunities created, including a dangerous kick from Jamie Doran which almost brought another score, while the Town defence continued to work hard despite the heavy workload.

The final Town points came right at the end when loan signing Harrison Jewitt produced a sensational 100-metre effort to race the length of the field and score.

Carter added the conversion to complete the scoring.

Most importantly, Town had shared the second-half scoring 14-12 with a side pushing towards the top end of the Championship table.

Whatever the result, one thing was impossible to miss at Widnes, the Town supporters.

A fantastic travelling contingent made the journey to support the team, with many embracing the fancy-dress theme and bringing plenty of colour and noise to the final away trip of the campaign.

The Fibrus Community Stadium will host the final game of the season, with Town looking to make it five consecutive victories over our local rivals.

It's the perfect opportunity to finish the campaign with a performance and result that the supporters can celebrate.

The season may have provided its challenges, but derby day brings a chance to put all of that aside.

One final opportunity to send the Town faithful home happy.
