REPORT: TOWN LADIES VS WARRINGTON

Our ladies played in their shield semi-final on Sunday!

Workington Town Ladies saw their impressive Challenge Shield run come to an end on Sunday, but they left the field with plenty to be proud of after a determined effort against a strong Warrington Wolves side.

Reaching the final four of the competition was already a significant achievement for this Town squad, who have continued to raise standards throughout an excellent 2026 campaign. Facing one of the competition's strongest teams on their own ground was always going to be a huge challenge, but Town approached the contest with the same commitment and determination that has characterised their season.

The hosts started strongly and were able to build an early advantage, capitalising on their opportunities when they came. Despite finding themselves under pressure, Town continued to work tirelessly in defence and never allowed their heads to drop.

As the first half progressed, Warrington managed to establish control on the scoreboard, but Town continued to battle for every metre and showed the resilience that has become a hallmark of this group.

The scoreline may not have reflected the effort being produced by the visitors, who continued to throw themselves into tackles and work hard for one another throughout the contest.

After the interval, Town looked to gain a foothold in the game and were led by the efforts of players such as Kacey Currie, Josie Scrimgour and Georgia Naylor, who continued to ask questions despite facing a well-drilled Wolves side.

Conditions were challenging and possession was difficult to come by at times, but the players never stopped competing. Every carry, tackle and chase demonstrated the pride the squad has in representing the club.

While Warrington were able to add further points during the second half, Town continued to fight until the final whistle, refusing to let the game drift away despite the circumstances.

The result brings an end to a memorable Shield campaign, but it should not overshadow what this group has accomplished.

After beginning the season with victories over Championship opposition and producing a series of impressive performances, Town have shown they can compete with some of the strongest teams in the women's game. Reaching the semi-finals is a significant achievement and another indication of how far this squad has developed over the last 12 months.

Perhaps most importantly, the players represented the badge with tremendous character. Even when faced with a difficult afternoon against quality opposition, they continued to work for each other, defend with pride and give everything until the final whistle.

The Challenge Shield journey may be over, but there remains plenty to play for in the league campaign. With a talented squad continuing to grow in confidence, Town Ladies can now turn their full attention to the remainder of the season.

Everyone connected with the club should be immensely proud of what this group has achieved so far in 2026. The semi-final result does not define this team - their commitment, resilience and progress throughout the season does.

The future remains incredibly bright for Workington Town Ladies. We now look to this weekends match away at Illingworth.
