REPORT: TOWN LADIES VS WAKEFIELD

It was a top of the table clash as our ladies look to go 3/3!
Workington Town Ladies continued their outstanding unbeaten start to 2026 on Sunday as they battled to a hard-fought 16-16 draw against fellow high-flyers Wakefield Trinity at the Fibrus Community Stadium.
In their first home league fixture of the season, Town showed tremendous resilience and quality against another unbeaten side in what proved to be a fiercely contested top-of-the-table clash.
Coming into the game, both teams had started the campaign strongly, and it quickly became clear why. The opening stages were intense and physical, with neither side giving much away as both defences stood firm.
Wakefield eventually opened the scoring after finding space out wide, but Town never allowed the setback to affect their confidence or intensity.
As the first half progressed, the contest became increasingly scrappy in difficult conditions, with both sides battling hard for field position. But just when it looked as though the visitors would take their lead into the break, Town produced a moment of brilliance.
Scottish star Evie Tonkin read the play perfectly, intercepting the ball before racing 60 metres to score an outstanding solo try right on halftime. Chatters then calmly added the conversion to send Town into the break with a deserved 6-4 lead.
The second half started exactly how Town would have wanted.
Showing energy and confidence, the hosts immediately piled pressure onto Wakefield and were rewarded when Tonkin crossed again following a superb link-up with Currie. Keeley Chatters then produced an excellent conversion into a strong wind to extend Town’s advantage.
Wakefield responded through a high kick that caused problems in difficult conditions, narrowing the gap, but Town refused to lose momentum.
The home side then produced the standout moment of the afternoon. Keeley Chatters burst clear on a brilliant 60-metre run to put Town deep into Trinity territory before Tonkin completed a deserved hat-trick to send the home supporters into celebration once again.
Wakefield managed to level the game shortly afterwards following a Town error, but the hosts continued to battle right until the final whistle in a contest that showcased the quality and determination of both sides.
While Town may have narrowly missed out on victory, there were huge positives to take from the performance. To go toe-to-toe with another unbeaten side and remain undefeated heading deeper into the season highlights just how much this squad continues to improve week after week.
The draw means Workington Town Ladies remain unbeaten in 2026 and continue to establish themselves as one of the strongest sides in the competition.
Another impressive performance, another important result, and plenty more signs that this Town Ladies side is building something special.
Attendance was 365 in our largest Ladies crowd ever for a game. Thank you to everyone who attended and the Arlecdon Rams and Ewes as main match sponsors for their support and naming Evie as player of the game.
They now look ahead to there next match at home as they take on Illingworth in a double header with the men taking on Barrow Raiders on the 7th of June.
