REPORT: TOWN LADIES VS LEIGH MINERS RANGERS

Our Town Ladies continued their winning ways on Sunday. Here is the report!

Workington Town Women opened their league season with an impressive 24–16 victory on the road, overcoming Leigh Miners Rangers with a performance full of resilience, quality, and growing confidence.

Making the short journey for their first league outing of the year, Town arrived in strong spirits following their recent Challenge Shield success, and once again showed they are a side on the rise in 2026.

There was an added boost before kick-off too, as Alice Rush returned to the squad after a lengthy spell out, giving the group an extra lift heading into the contest.

The early stages proved challenging, with Leigh striking first to take the lead and apply early pressure. But Town responded in the best possible way, through sheer determination.

Beth Adams powered her way over for Town’s opening score, dragging multiple defenders with her in a show of strength and intent that helped swing momentum back towards the visitors.

The contest became a scrappy and physical battle, with both sides struggling for fluency at times. Leigh managed to edge further ahead with another score out wide, leaving Town with work to do heading into the second half.

But the response after the break was outstanding.

Town came out with purpose and quickly made it count. Leia Turner finished off a well-worked move to close the gap, setting the tone for a dominant spell.

Confidence grew from there. A powerful break from Josie Scrimgour opened things up, and sharp play from Keeley Chatters created the opportunity for Katelyn Misfud to cross and give Town the lead, a moment that firmly shifted control of the game.

With momentum now fully in their favour, Town continued to press. Leonie Bragg added another try to extend the advantage, before Chatters capped off an excellent individual display by getting on the scoresheet herself, pushing the lead further clear.

Defensively, Town stood tall when it mattered most. Leigh mounted late pressure, but the visitors remained composed and organised, dealing well with everything thrown at them.

A late score for the hosts narrowed the gap, but Town managed the closing stages professionally by forcing errors, controlling territory, and seeing the game out with confidence.

It was a strong, hard-fought victory and another sign of the progress this team is making. Backing up last week’s cup performance with a league win on the road highlights the belief and togetherness building within the squad.

A winning start to the league season and plenty more to come from this Town Ladies side.
