REPORT: TOWN LADIES VS HULL FC

Our Town Ladies produced an unforgettable win on Sunday. Here is the report.
Workington Town Ladies kicked off their season in sensational fashion, producing a remarkable comeback to defeat Championship side Hull FC 24–14 in the Women’s Shield, a result that sends a clear message about the growth and ambition of this squad.
Having automatically progressed through the opening two rounds due to opposition teams being unable to field sides, this fixture marked Town’s first time taking to the field this season. And what a way to start.
Facing opposition from a league above, Town went into the contest as underdogs. But from the very first whistle, it was clear this group had no intention of playing second best.
Town couldn’t have asked for a better start. Inside just two minutes, Josie Scrimgour crossed the line to give the hosts an early 6–0 lead, setting the tone for a fearless performance.
Hull FC, showing their quality and experience, responded strongly. They worked their way back into the game and began to take control, scoring three unanswered tries to turn the game on its head and take a 14–6 lead into the break.
At halftime, Town found themselves behind against a strong Championship outfit but there was no panic, only belief.
The response in the second half was nothing short of outstanding.
Town came out with renewed energy and purpose, and it wasn’t long before the comeback began. On debut, Leonie Bragg made an immediate impact, crossing for a crucial try to close the gap and spark momentum.
That belief continued to build, and soon after, Beth Adams powered over to edge Town back in front at 16–14, a turning point that lifted both the team and the supporters.
With confidence growing, another debutant stepped up. Becca Gilpin marked her first appearance in a Town shirt with a try, extending the lead and capping off a brilliant introduction to the side.
Town weren’t done there.
Sophie Price added the finishing touch with another well-taken try, sealing a famous 24–14 victory and completing an incredible second-half turnaround.
From 14–6 down at halftime to 24–14 winners, it was a performance built on resilience, teamwork, and belief. All of which are qualities that define this Town Ladies side.
To overcome a team from a higher division in the opening game of the season makes the result even more significant. It’s a statement win, not just in this competition, but for the direction the team is heading.
The victory sees Workington Town Women progress into the semi-finals of the Women’s Shield, a fantastic achievement and one the entire club can be proud of.
An unforgettable start to the season, and a performance that shows this team is ready to compete with anyone.
