REPORT: TOWN VS HAVEN

Town take 4 in row against Whitehaven! Here is the report!

Workington Town returned to winning ways in the best possible fashion on Good Friday, producing a determined and high-quality performance to secure a 22–14 victory over local rivals Whitehaven and extend our recent dominance in the West Cumbrian derby.

After a tough run of results, this was exactly the response the players, staff, and supporters were looking for - a performance built on resilience, character, and belief.

The game didn’t start our way, with Whitehaven applying early pressure in difficult, muddy conditions. Losing Stevie Scholey early in the contest added to the challenge, and the hosts capitalised on their strong opening to take an early lead.

But what followed showed the true spirit of this Town side.

As the first half wore on, we began to grow into the game. The turning point came with the introduction of Jamie Doran, whose composure and control helped settle the team and shift momentum in our favour.

Sustained pressure finally paid off when Grant Reid showed great determination to reach out and ground the ball following a clever Doran kick, bringing us right back into the contest. Jake Carter added the extras, and from that moment, you could feel the belief building.

Carter then calmly slotted a penalty to level things heading into the break, a deserved reward after a strong finish to the half.

From there, Town took control.

The second half was a display of discipline, physicality, and smart rugby. With improved field position and control, we began to apply real pressure, and the points followed.

Carter crossed for a crucial try after excellent work from Jamie Doran created the opportunity, before Jack Stephenson powered his way over shortly after to extend our lead.

Confidence was flowing, and the team continued to push.

The defining moment came when Evan Lawther produced a huge effort to drive over the line, carrying defenders with him to cap off a dominant spell that saw Town score 22 unanswered points in a blistering period of the game.

Defensively, the effort was just as impressive. Time and again, the team stood strong, shutting down Whitehaven’s attacks and showing the grit needed to win tough derby matches.

While the hosts managed a late consolation, the result never truly felt in doubt as Town saw out the game professionally to secure a fully deserved victory.

It’s a win that means a lot, not just for local bragging rights, but as a statement of the character within this group. After a challenging few weeks, the response was exactly what was needed, and it gives us real momentum heading into the next fixture.

Attention now turns to this Sunday, where we host Midlands Hurricanes, and the focus is firmly on building from this performance.

With confidence restored and belief growing, Town will be looking to carry this energy forward and give our supporters even more to cheer about.
