REPORT: TOWN VS THUNDER

Our Town men travelled to Newcastle to take on the Thunder. Here is the report.
Workington Town endured a difficult afternoon on the road as Newcastle Thunder claimed a 38–8 victory at Blaydon.
With strong winds sweeping across the ground, it was always going to be a test of composure and control for both sides. Newcastle managed to capitalise early, building a lead through a series of quick-fire tries, putting Town on the back foot in the opening stages.
Despite the early setback, there were clear signs of character from Town. The side refused to let their heads drop and began to work their way into the contest, showing improved control and determination as the first half progressed. Defensive efforts tightened, and with ball in hand, Town started to create opportunities and apply pressure.
A disruption came midway through the half when Callum Phillips was forced off for a head injury assessment, prompting a reshuffle, but his return before the break provided a welcome boost and reflected the toughness within the squad.
Trailing at the interval, the message was clear for Town, start fast and get back into the contest. Town did exactly that early in the second half when Jack Ainley crossed for his first try in professional rugby league. It was a deserved moment for the young forward and a positive sign for the club’s future, highlighting the talent coming through the ranks.
While Newcastle were able to respond and extend their lead, Town continued to battle throughout. There were flashes of attacking quality, and the commitment from the group never wavered, even as the game became stretched.
A second try came late on when Alex Donaghy finished well out wide following a sharp pass from Dom Weir, rewarding Town for their persistence and willingness to keep playing.
In the closing stages, Town pushed again and came close to adding another, with Zarrin Galea just unable to gather a fast pass that could have narrowed the margin further - a moment that summed up the fine margins on the day.
While recent results haven’t reflected the standards the club sets for itself, there is no shortage of effort or belief within the group. The squad continues to work hard, blooding young talent and building combinations that will be crucial moving forward.
Attention now turns to one of the biggest games of the season - the Good Friday West Cumbrian derby against Whitehaven. It presents the perfect opportunity for Town to respond, put things right, and deliver a performance that reflects the pride and passion of the badge.
The backing of the supporters will be more important than ever - and this group is determined to give them something to shout about.
