OFFICIAL CLUB STATEMENT

We are calling for action in the best interests of the game.

Our immediate thoughts are with the players, staff and fans of Newcastle Thunder after Friday's announcement that they have withdrawn from the RFL League One competition for 2024. We hope that everyone that relies on the club financially is quickly sorted.

Workington Town now asks that fellow clubs and the RFL acts quickly and decisively to position rugby league at the secondary level for the future. League 1 is now unsustainable.

To be clear, we are not asking for more distributed funding.

We are asking that we have more games that are interesting to fans and sponsors and the associated ability to generate our own income through meaningful games against the biggest and best clubs.

Clubs rise and fall over time and it’s jeopardy that makes sport interesting for everyone involved. Some Championship clubs were in League 1 not that long ago.

8 teams doesn’t cut it. It’s disappointing that clubs voted against the opportunity to change structure last week before the Newcastle news.

We respectfully call on all involved in decisions to do what’s right for our game and pull together in best rather than self interest.
