JIMMY'S 'TODDLE FOR TOWN!'

78 year old Jimmy Woolaghan joins in the fundraising efforts!

This week we were approached by Vicky McDonald, daughter of the legendary Jimmy Woolaghan, an integral part of our backroom staff at Derwent Park.

Jimmy and Vicky have come up with an idea that will make good use of Jimmy's daily exercise allowance and also hopefully raise some funds for their beloved Workington Town RLFC. We've had scratch cards, just giving pages, donations, #tashesfortown and now we are pleased to announce:

JIMMY'S 'TODDLE FOR TOWN!'

Vicky proudly wrote;

'I am so proud to be writing this, my 78 year old Dad and 'Town' legend Jimmy Woolaghan would like to support the fundraising for his beloved Workington Town RLFC.

He is going to walk 5 in every 7 mornings a daily distance of 3.5 miles, on his own of course he'll be starting from his home and will walk over to the Town's historic 'Slag bank' walk up it, over it, back down it and back home again.

Dad has served at his beloved second home of Derwent Park for 41 years, not just for the first team, he has assisted with the A Team and Academy set ups and has also been fitness trainer, Buffer's caddy, kitman, water carrier, masseuse, A.N Other (unnamed player when short).

On one occasion he even played for the away team to make up the numbers and got his nose broke in a tackle by his own player Joe Sullivan! It could have only happened to Dad!

His love for the game and his club is unquestionable, he has a lot of respect and he loves a good laugh, loves to sing although obviously tone deaf and dance, he can do a mean floss and enjoys being around the team and fans in The Gus Risman Bar after our games. He has also had a few nicknames that I know of. I've heard Slugger and mainly Jimmy 6 tree's when he used to make the players sprint to one tree and back to the start, then another tree further on and back until all 6 trees were done! and ex-Town player Brett Carter named him 'The angriest man in rugby league'.

He's seen a lot of people come and go and he has known the greats of the club including the likes of Billy Pattinson, Paul Charlton, John Jones, The Gorley brothers, Jimmy Pickering and Peter Walsh, the list goes on and on. As far as I'm aware he  has only ever missed training, a match, an event or meeting if he was on holiday, if he was ill (very rare) he has still headed to DP.

Up until the outbreak of Covid19 he would train 5 days a week at Ted's Gym and never sits still, so this is a positive, healthy way of burning his energy off for a good cause, to me he's an inspiration and I hope to be like him at his age. In my opinion he deserves to be in the Hall of Fame!

So we've set up and account where you can transfer money directly in to it and all monies raised by Dad's efforts will go to the club.'
