REPORT: TOWN VS MIDLANDS

Our Town men had their longest away trip to Midlands yesterday.

Workington Town suffered late heartbreak on the road as Midlands Hurricanes snatched a 30-24 victory in a dramatic Championship contest in Birmingham.

Town looked set to complete a memorable comeback after overturning a 20-12 half-time deficit to lead 24-20 with just 10 minutes remaining. However, two late Hurricanes tries ultimately denied Town the points despite a spirited performance from the visitors.

The result was particularly frustrating after Town had battled their way into a winning position during the final quarter.

Hurricanes Strike Early

The hosts made the brighter start, opening the scoring after just four minutes when Lewis Else found space on Town's right edge. Sully Medforth converted to put Midlands 6-0 ahead.

Town were forced to defend again shortly afterwards, with Midlands extending their advantage when Todd Horner crossed following a Town knock-on. This time, the conversion attempt was unsuccessful.

Town responded impressively on 15 minutes.

Zarrin Galea's kick created the opportunity for Evan Lawther, who powered through the Hurricanes defence before racing under the posts. Jake Carter added the conversion to bring Town back within two points.

The opening half then became a scrappy affair, with both sides guilty of handling errors, but Town's defence continued to stand firm.

Dom Wear looked to have broken through on 23 minutes with a powerful run, only for former Town player Tyler Dickinson to make a huge defensive intervention and force the ball loose.

Midlands capitalised on the turnover, working the ball downfield before Matty Chrimes crossed. The conversion was missed, leaving the hosts 14-6 ahead.

Doran Produces Moment of Magic

Town responded with one of the standout moments of the afternoon.

Oscar Doran collected the ball inside his own 10-metre area before embarking on a brilliant individual run, beating several defenders and racing the length of the field to score.

Carter converted for the second time, bringing Town back to within two points at 14-12.

The hosts finished the half strongly, but Town's defence did well to withstand the pressure and force a drop-out.

Unfortunately, with just 14 seconds remaining before the interval, Midlands found a way through as Tom Wilkinson crashed over close to the posts. Chrimes added the conversion, giving the Hurricanes a 20-12 advantage at half-time.

Town Fight Back

Town came out strongly after the break and began to take control of the contest.

The two sides traded sets during the opening stages of the second half, with neither able to add to the scoreboard.

Town's pressure eventually told just beyond the hour mark.

Following a restart, Jamie Doran found his way over the line and Carter converted to bring Town right back into the contest at 20-18.

The momentum was now firmly with the visitors.

Town continued to attack and Oscar Doran and Tana Featherstone combined brilliantly during one promising passage, but the Hurricanes defence held firm.

Then, on 70 minutes, Town finally found the breakthrough.

A Midlands error on the fourth tackle handed Town possession in the Hurricanes' half and the visitors made them pay. Dom Wear finished the opportunity to put Town in front for the first time in the afternoon.

Carter added the extras and Town had turned the game around, leading 24-20 with just 10 minutes remaining.

Late Heartbreak

Unfortunately for Town, the final stages belonged to the hosts.

With six minutes remaining, Warren crossed for Midlands to level the scores at 24-24, although the conversion was unsuccessful.

Town were still within touching distance of victory, but with just two minutes remaining a costly error near their own line gave the Hurricanes the opportunity they needed.

Chrimes pounced to score what proved to be the decisive try, before adding the conversion to put Midlands 30-24 ahead.

Town had one final opportunity following the restart but managed just one carry before the final hooter sounded.

The defeat was a bitter one for Town after a determined second-half comeback had put the visitors in front and within touching distance of victory.

Despite the result, there were plenty of positives to take from the performance, particularly the character shown to recover from an eight-point half-time deficit and establish a four-point lead late in the game.

The focus now turns to this Sundays Home Double Header as Town look to bounce back against Rochdale.
