Brad Singleton is Appointed as Head Coach as Jonty Moves into Head of Rugby Role!

Workington Town can confirm a major coaching restructure ahead of the 2027 season, with long-serving Head Coach Jonty Gorley set to move into a new role as the club’s Head of Rugby, while former Leeds Rhinos and Castleford Tigers forward Brad Singleton has been appointed as the club’s new Head Coach.

The changes form part of the club’s long-term strategy as Town continue to build for the future, strengthening links across the community, developing pathways for local talent and preparing for the next chapter both on and off the field.

Gorley will remain in charge of first-team duties for the remainder of the 2026 campaign before stepping into his new position ahead of the 2027 season. In his new role, he will continue to play a key part in the club’s rugby operations, working closely with the incoming Head Coach, supporting player recruitment and retention, and helping to develop stronger relationships with amateur clubs throughout Cumbria.

Gorley Moves Into Head of Rugby Role

Since taking over as Head Coach in 2024, Gorley has played a significant role in Town’s progression, guiding the club through a successful period that saw promotion into the Betfred Championship and helping establish a strong foundation for the future.

However, due to changes in his work commitments and family responsibilities, Gorley made the decision that a change was needed.

Speaking about the decision, Gorley said:

“I can’t be head coach if I can’t get to every session, mate.

“It is time for a change.”

Despite stepping away from the touchline, Gorley was clear that his commitment to the club remains stronger than ever.

“I’m a Workington Town fan. I love the club and it’s great that I can still be involved.”

As Head of Rugby, Gorley will continue to use his experience and knowledge of the local game to help shape the future of Workington Town.

One of his key priorities will be rebuilding and strengthening relationships with amateur clubs across the region, creating a clearer pathway for players coming through the Cumbrian rugby league system.

“That’s going to be my biggest job, getting around the amateur clubs and building those relationships up.”

Town Chairman Graeme Peers said retaining Gorley’s knowledge and experience was a vital part of the restructure.

“We did not want to lose Jonty. He has been a huge part of this club and would have been a big miss as Head Coach. This new role allows us to keep his experience, his passion and his connection with Workington Town while also allowing us to move forward with fresh ideas.”

Brad Singleton Appointed Head Coach

Workington Town are delighted to announce that Brad Singleton will take over as Head Coach from the beginning of the 2027 season.

The Barrow-born forward brings a wealth of experience from an outstanding playing career, having made more than 300 professional appearances at the highest level.

Singleton enjoyed a hugely successful spell with Leeds Rhinos, where he won a Super League Grand Final, Challenge Cup and World Club Challenge treble in 2015, before also representing Wakefield Trinity, Wigan Warriors and Castleford Tigers. He has also represented Ireland on the international stage.

Currently playing for Barrow Raiders, Singleton will continue his playing commitments throughout the 2026 season before beginning his coaching journey with Town in 2027.

Speaking about his appointment, Singleton said:

“It’s my first gig and I’m excited about working with the club and how much Workington gets behind the team.

“There’s going to be tough moments and big moments.”

Singleton has already begun working alongside Gorley on plans for the 2027 squad, including player retention and recruitment.

When building his squad, Singleton highlighted the importance of bringing in players with the right qualities both on and off the field.

“Fitness, game management and rugby IQ are going to be really important. We want players who understand what it means to play for Workington Town and who can help us continue to build.”

Looking Towards The Future

The restructure represents an exciting new chapter for Workington Town as the club continues its ambitions both within the Championship and across the wider Cumbrian rugby league community.

The move will allow Gorley to focus on developing the club’s rugby structures, strengthening links with local clubs, and supporting the growth of the women’s and youth pathways, while Singleton brings fresh ideas and a new approach into the first-team environment.

The club believes the combination of Gorley’s experience and Singleton’s ambition provides the foundations for continued progress.

Gorley will continue as Head Coach for the remainder of the 2026 season, including the traditional Black Ball derby against Whitehaven at the Fibrus Community Stadium.

His final game in charge will take place on home soil, and while he hopes to finish the campaign with a victory, Gorley knows his contribution to Workington Town goes far beyond one result.
