REPORT: TOWN VS HUNSLET

Our Town men took on Hunslet at home on Sunday looking to do the league double!

Workington Town returned to winning ways in impressive fashion on Sunday afternoon, producing one of their most complete performances of the season to overcome Hunslet 40-14 at the Fibrus Community Stadium.

After a campaign that has tested the squad's resilience on numerous occasions, Town delivered the type of display supporters have been waiting for, combining powerful defence, clinical finishing and an attacking threat that caused problems throughout the afternoon.

In front of an appreciative home crowd enjoying the summer sunshine, Town showed their intent from the outset. Although Hunslet were first to trouble the scoreboard, the response from the hosts was immediate and emphatic.

Evan Lawther set the tone for the afternoon when he bulldozed his way over from the restart, refusing to be stopped despite the attention of multiple defenders. It was a moment that sparked Town into life and shifted momentum firmly in the home side's favour.

With confidence growing, Town began to dominate territory and possession. Their pressure was eventually rewarded when Braden Leigh dived into the corner to edge the hosts in front before a flowing move involving Zarrin Galea and Bear Williams created the opportunity for Jake Carter to finish and extend the advantage.

Town were in no mood to let up and finished the opening half strongly. A sharp break from Lucas Castle opened the field before Galea used his pace to race clear and score, giving the hosts breathing room heading into the interval.

The second half saw Town take complete control.

Tuarae Rawhiti produced a brilliant individual effort from dummy half to add further points before Hunslet's afternoon became even more difficult when they were reduced to twelve men.

Town immediately capitalised.

Mason Lewthwaite burst through a huge gap to score before another powerful attacking move ended with Carter crossing for his second try of the afternoon. Carter was influential throughout, controlling the game superbly and adding the extras from the kicking tee.

The home side continued to play with confidence and purpose, and Rio Corkill was next to get on the scoresheet as Town's attacking pressure continued to overwhelm the visitors.

While Hunslet managed a couple of late scores, the result was never in doubt as Town comfortably saw out the closing stages to secure a deserved victory.

There were standout performances across the park. Lawther was immense through the middle, Galea looked dangerous whenever he touched the ball, Lewthwaite provided real punch in attack, and Carter delivered an outstanding all-round display to guide the team around the field.

Most pleasing of all was the manner of the performance. The energy, intensity and commitment shown for the full 80 minutes reflected the hard work being put in behind the scenes and gave supporters plenty to be excited about moving forward.

The victory provides a welcome boost heading into a short break before Town return to Championship action later this month.

Everyone at the club would like to thank the fantastic Town supporters for their backing once again. Your support continues to drive the team forward, and we look forward to seeing you all again when we play Sheffield away in a fortnights time!
