REPORT: TOWN LADIES VS WAKEFIELD

Our ladies were looking unbeaten in 2026 on Sunday!
Workington Town Ladies suffered their first defeat of the season on Sunday, but not before producing another determined display against fellow title challengers Wakefield Trinity in a contest that showcased two of the division's strongest sides.
With both teams entering the fixture separated only by points difference and unbeaten in league competition, there was a real sense of occasion as Town travelled to Yorkshire for what many viewed as an early-season benchmark match.
The visitors arrived in confident mood following an excellent start to 2026 and were buoyed by the continued support from the wider Workington Town family, with encouragement coming from across the club throughout the week.
Town made a bright start and quickly showed they had no intention of simply making up the numbers. Strong defence and excellent field position allowed the visitors to settle into the game, before Josie Scrimgour produced a moment of individual brilliance. Spotting space in the defensive line, she accelerated clear and raced the length of the field to hand Town an early lead, with Keeley Chatters adding the conversion.
The score gave Town confidence and they continued to challenge Wakefield with disciplined kicking and energetic defence.
However, the hosts responded well and gradually began to gain momentum. Two first-half tries helped Trinity edge in front, and despite Town continuing to battle hard, they found themselves trailing at the interval.
The game remained finely balanced for long periods, with both teams showing why they have been among the pace-setters this season. Every set carried significance and neither side was willing to give an inch.
Wakefield extended their advantage shortly after the restart, but Town refused to let the contest slip away. Kacey Currie crossed out wide to bring the visitors back into the game and briefly reignited hopes of another comeback.
As the match entered its closing stages, Trinity managed to capitalise on a couple of opportunities to create breathing space on the scoreboard. Despite the setback, Town continued to ask questions of the home defence and spent time attacking deep in Wakefield territory until the final whistle.
While the result was not the one Town were looking for, there were still plenty of positives to take away from the afternoon. The squad matched one of the division's strongest teams for large periods and once again demonstrated the commitment, resilience and togetherness that have been hallmarks of their impressive season so far.
Every unbeaten run eventually comes to an end, but this performance should not overshadow what has been an outstanding campaign to date. Town remain firmly in the hunt near the top of the table and have already shown throughout the season that they possess the quality to compete with anyone in the competition.
The focus now turns to the next challenge, with the squad determined to learn from the experience and return stronger as they continue their push towards the business end of the season.
The journey is far from over, and this Town Ladies side has already proven that setbacks only strengthen their resolve.
The Ladies will now turn their attention to their Cup Semi-Final this Sunday away vs Warrington!
