REPORT: TOWN LADIES VS ILLINGWORTH

Our ladies remain unbeaten in 2026 on Sunday!

Workington Town Ladies made it five games unbeaten in all competitions with another impressive display on Sunday, comfortably overcoming Illingworth at The Paddock to continue their excellent start to the 2026 season.

Fresh from their shut out victory over Rochdale Hornets the previous weekend, Town returned to home soil full of confidence and welcomed back several key players to an already in-form squad. The return of Josie Scrimgour, Nikita Gibson and Evie Tonkin provided a major boost as Town looked to strengthen their position near the top of the league table.

Despite battling difficult weather conditions throughout the afternoon, Town wasted little time asserting themselves on the contest.

The hosts were on the scoreboard within the opening few minutes. Strong carries from Beth Adams and Bethani Fearns laid the foundations before Georgia Naylor darted over from dummy half to finish off an excellent attacking set. Keeley Chatters added the extras to give Town an early advantage.

The momentum continued immediately from the restart. Town's forward pack again marched the side downfield before Fearns crossed for the second try of the afternoon, with Chatters maintaining her perfect record from the tee.

Playing with confidence and intensity, Town continued to ask questions of the Illingworth defence. A brilliant break from Evie Tonkin created the next opportunity, and Leonie Bragg showed tremendous determination to shrug off defenders and power her way to the line. Another successful conversion extended Town's lead and capped a superb opening spell.

The strong wind made handling difficult for both teams throughout the contest, but Town adapted impressively and remained in control. Josie Scrimgour was next to get on the scoresheet, taking advantage of an attacking opportunity to further increase the advantage before halftime.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with Town continuing to dominate territory and possession.

Kayley Robinson-Murray proved the star of the second period, crossing twice as the hosts' attacking combinations continued to create opportunities across the park. Her pace and determination caused constant problems for the visitors as Town stretched their lead even further.

There was still time for a special moment late in the game when Robinson-Murray completed the first hat-trick of her senior career, putting the finishing touches on another excellent team performance and earning a deserved round of applause from those in attendance.

While the difficult conditions made free-flowing rugby challenging at times, Town's commitment, defensive effort and attacking quality once again shone through.

The victory continues an impressive unbeaten run and further highlights the progress being made by this exciting Town Ladies squad. With players returning, confidence growing and performances improving week after week, there is plenty for supporters to be excited about as the season continues.

They now look to this weekend where they face top of the table, Wakefield, as both teams look to remain unbeaten in 2026, with their last clash ending in a draw.
