REPORT: TOWN VS KEIGHLEY

Yesterday our Town men travelled to Keighley. Here's the match report.
Workington Town travelled out to Keighley yesterday and showed real grit and character to claim our first point of the season in a thrilling 16–16 draw away to Keighley, building on the positive match last week and producing a performance full of resilience and belief.
Town made a strong start and were rewarded inside the opening 10 minutes when Alex Donaghy crossed for a well-worked try, which Jake Carter duly converted to give us an early lead. Keighley responded before the half-hour mark, but Workington remained composed and continued to threaten. Zarrin Galea was unlucky to see a try ruled out for offside just before the interval, a decision that denied Town what would have been the lead at the break.
Keighley edged in front early in the second half, but Workington refused to go away and kept applying pressure. That persistence paid off midway through the half as Town struck twice in three outstanding minutes. Jake Dickinson powered over before Ewan Lawther followed up soon after, turning the contest on its head. Jake Carter’s conversion pushed Workington into a deserved 16–14 advantage with just 11 minutes remaining.
Town very nearly sealed the contest late on when Tuarae Rawhiti came agonisingly close to grounding the ball over the line, but it wasn’t to be. Keighley managed to force a late penalty to level the scores, and a last-gasp drop-goal attempt fell just wide, ensuring the points were shared after a gripping encounter.
The result sees Town open our account for the season and underlined the fighting spirit building within the squad. It was a performance full of positives against a competitive Keighley Cougars side and showed clear signs of progress as Town look ahead with confidence.
Our attention turns to this Sunday at the Fibrus Community Stadium, our home, as we take on Salford for the first time in 30 years.
