REPORT: TOWN VS WIDNES

On Sunday our Town men took on Widnes at home. Here's the report.
Workington Town produced a spirited and physical performance at home on Sunday, pushing Widnes all the way before eventually falling 22–10 at the Fibrus Community Stadium.
In a contest that was tight for long periods, Town demonstrated resilience, attacking intent and plenty of character, particularly either side of the half-time break giving plenty of encouragement moving forward.
Widnes opened the scoring early, but Town responded in superb fashion midway through the first half when Zarrin Galea showed outstanding awareness to claim a high kick under pressure before beating two defenders and racing 70 metres to the line in a moment of individual brilliance that brought Town level and injected real energy into the contest.
The hosts regained the lead before the break to take a 12–6 advantage into half-time, but Town emerged for the second half with renewed purpose.
That pressure paid off when Tuarae Rawhiti reacted quickest to a clever kick in behind, grounding the ball to reduce the deficit to just two points. With momentum building and belief growing, Town looked well placed to push on and complete the comeback.
As the game entered its final quarter, Widnes capitalised on a couple of key moments to extend their lead, but Town continued to compete strongly in what was a physical and demanding encounter throughout especially after being reduced to 15 men for majority of the contest, losing halfback Dominic Wear to an ankle injury and winger Oscar Doran to a leg injury. Rio Corkill also came off for a HIA that was later passed.
Despite the result not going our way, there were plenty of positives to take from the performance, from Galea’s electric try to the team’s strong defensive effort and second-half response.
With effort, energy and commitment on full display, Town now turn their focus to the next challenge, Keighley Cougars away on the 1st of March, determined to build on the positives and convert strong passages into points.
We look forward to seeing the Town faithful behind us next time out as we continue our campaign together.
