TOWN REGAIN THE IKE SOUTHWARD MEMORIAL TROPHY!

Last gasp Henson try secures win for Town!

Workington Town regained the Ike Southward Memorial Trophy in a classic and feisty West Cumbrian derby to break Jonty Gorley's Whitehaven hearts!

Town who were never in front in the game up until that winning score battled hard against their more experienced Whitehaven side boasting a number of ex-Town stars in their ranks.

Whitehaven opened the scoring through an unconverted score out wide through new signing Dave Eccleston and went in 4-0 to the good. A second converted score by Wilkinson made it 0-10 before Town replied through young halfback and eventual Man of the Match Ciaran Walker who's show and go left Haven's defence flat footed, Doran converted and Town were back in it.  

Haven appeared to put the game out of Town's reach when they stretched the score to 14-6 but after an impressive break from debutant Curtis Teare making it deep in to Haven territory with the ball then going through the hands to the ever impressive Ethan Bickerdike who shrugged of a weak attempt to touch down in the corner, Doran converted and it was 12-14. 

As Town pressed they ended up with a Doran run being held just short but then a quick set play with multiple runners scattered the defensive line as hooker Evan Simons found a charging Henson who spotted a gap to dive over with seconds to spare! 

Doran again converted to make 3/3 on the day and Town brought the Ike Southward Trophy home and Town fans flooded the bars to enjoy a memorable win!

The Championship campaign starts on 30th January when EAST meets WEST as full time and big spending Newcastle Thunder arrive at Derwent Park!
